Aire Flamenco presents FLAMENCO AT THE QUARRY - featuring the Music of Paco de Lucia and special guest Roshanne de Silva Wijeyeratne.

Join us for an evening of Flamenco at the spectacular natural bushland setting of the Quarry Ampitheatre.

Australia’s finest musicians accompany the dynamic dancing of special guest artist Roshanne de Silva Wijeyeratne.
‍
Justin Kutylowski (USA) on guitar and vocals will perform a range of Flamenco works featuring the Music of Paco de Lucia.
‍
Aire Flamenco dancer Maree Laffan and Award-Winning percussionist and former Cirque Du Soleil performer Marcus Perrozzi will join on stage for an all-star performance.

Special guest Roshanne de Silva Wijeyeratne is an internationally awarded Flamenco dancer who lives between Europe and Australia. Her passionate performances have inspired invitations to solo in festivals and tablaos around the world including Sevilla Spain, London, New York City and New Zealand. Roshanne was awarded in Spain with the Beca de Oro (Gold Scholarship) from Madrid’s prestigious flamenco academy, ‘Amor de Dios’ and recently won two Best Overall Dance Awards at the Adelaide and Darwin Fringe Festivals 2022 soloing for Sydney Dance Company Flamenkisimo.

In January 2024, she is offering Flamenco workshops in Perth to develop your dance skills, your knowledge of Flamenco Theory, Songs, and Palmas, and helping you to unlock the complexities of flamenco rhythms. She is skilled in demystifying the relationship between dancer, singer and musician, so that students can really feel the meaning and communication behind the steps they are learning and express themselves from head to toe. Beginners – Bulerías por Fiesta
4:00-5:00pm each day (3 hours)A fun and invigorating course to develop all the building blocks for how to dance Bulerias por Fiesta. The course will be accompanied by cante por bulerias  (singing) by Roshanne. Students will explore all the resources necessary to build and understand the structure of dancing Bulerias por Fiesta. Course will cover entradas, marcajes and upper body work, llamadas y salidas (exits). Roshanne enjoys focusing on finding body groove in bulerias and understanding how to get up and dance por fiesta with confidence.

Intermediate/Advanced – Tangos de Granada con Mantón de Manila
5:00-6:30pm each day (4.5 hrs)Tangos con Mantón is rarely seen and an absolute joy to dance! This course will focus on the delivery of choreography with Mantón de Manila por Tangos and also essential body movements for embodying the weight and playfulness of Tangos de Granada. Students who have not developed fundamental hand and arm techniques in Manton techniques are welcome to take this course without Manton. Some intermediate Manton technique may be revised as the choreography is developed.

FLAMENCO MUSIC WORKSHOPS - ALL WELCOME

These workshops are presented by Aire Flamenco and supported by The Spanish Club WA are open to all Flamenco students in Perth and beyond!

‍PERTH 2-DAY MUSIC WORKSHOP (SAT 27 – SUN 28 JANUARY 2024)
Flamenco Cajón
9:00-10:00am each day (2 hours)
This course is an introduction to accompanying Flamenco music and dance on the cajón. It is a brilliant skill for developing your timing, coordination, rhythm and musical knowledge. The course will cover fundamental drills for accompanying Flamenco and some of the most popular and useable grooves in bulerías and tangos.

Flamenco Palmas
10:00-11:00am each day (2 hrs)
Please bring your Flamenco shoes! Palmas (clapping) is an instrument itself and can take years to develop and master. A Flamenco dancer should be able to accompany musicians and other dancers as part of the musical ensemble. This course will look at specific technique to create different sounds and textures, basic compas and nuances of common Palos and also some fun combinations to accompany bulerías, tangos, alegrías... You are welcome to make palo requests too!

Flamenco Singing & Communication
11:00-12:00am each day (2 hrs)
You do not need to be a singer or even sing a single note out loud for this class to be beneficial to your Flamenco dance development. It is designed for dancers. Studying Flamenco cante (song) is the way to understand the structure of Flamenco dance and how to improvise or even create a choreography. This course will focus on the structure of cante por bulerías to complement the bulerías dance workshop, develop your ability to communicate with the singer and guitarist and expand your knowledge on Flamenco theory. If you are doing the bulerías workshop, it is recommended but not imperative that you attend this class. There's nothing more liberating in Flamenco than knowing the how, why and when of what's happening during Fiestas!

Aire Flamenco Troupe will take you on a journey into the world of Flamenco, to the deep roots of the art form that UNESCO has declared a ‘Culture for Humanity’.

Australia’s finest musicians accompany the dynamic dancing and passion of the Aire Flamenco dancers. The show will transect a diverse range of styles and regions in Spain, from the heartland of Andalucia to influences from other continents, including Latin America and its Moorish history.

All primary expressions of Flamenco will be included: the dance (el baile), the guitar (el toque), the voice (el cante) and percussion (percusión).

Intertwine explores what it means to be Chinese and in Australia. Expressed through a variety dance forms and theatre acting, the performers share their stories to confront all the challenges and charms of being Chinese in today’s globalised world.

The performers who live in Perth come from the Reunion Island, Mauritius, Malaysia, Hong Kong and South Africa. Using many forms of artistic expression including drama, narrative, and visual art this show ebbs and flows to tell these unique, intimate and provoking stories. By peeling away the layers on the Blue Room stage, this community would like to share their ups and downs of being Chinese.
